The man is thought to have jumped on to the train from an overhead bridge in Calais as it slowed on its approach to the Channel Tunnel.
He then held on for around 45 minutes as the train travelled through the 31-mile tunnel and re-emerged in Kent, where it hit a top speed of 186mph.
The man, believed to be of Indian descent and in his early 20s, was only discovered at Ebbsfleet International Station, near Dartford, as he manoeuvred off the roof and attempted to hide in the gap between two carriages.
He was arrested by officers from the British Transport Police before being handed over to the UK Border Agency and given a medical examination.
It is believed he chose to leap onto the train at Calais because the train slows to 100mph near the tunnel.
Passengers on the train from Brussels to London were delayed while officers led the man away just after 7pm on Thursday.
British Transport Police used sniffer dogs to search for other immigrants but it is believed that the man had been travelling alone.
He is due to be interviewed by border agency officials within the next few days with the aid of an interpreter......
France is under pressure to stem the tide of migrants but Besson said that Britain needed to do more to tighten its controls.
