Plans for a £50-a-head tax to help fund public services for immigrants will produce only a fraction of the money needed, campaigners have warned.Communities Secretary Hazel Blears will outline plans to charge every non-European immigrant £50 when they apply for a student or work visa to enter Britain.
The money will be put in a Migration Trust Fund and used to help local authorities cope with major influxes of foreigners. Ministers hope the tax will generate about £35million a year, but the think-tank MigrationWatch said this amounts to just 7p for each £1 already spent by the state on the costs of mass immigration.
The group's analysis highlights a range of existing spending, such as a £289million project at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills boosting English language-teaching.
In all, MigrationWatch has identified £517.8million of spending on immigrant-related programmes.
Its chairman Sir Andrew Green said the £35million a year was 'a drop in the ocean against the huge sums spent trying to help society cope with the impact of immigration'.And the figures, he said, did not allow for the fact that a new home 'will have to be built every six minutes for new immigrants', nor NHS or school costs.
