British pensioners get jumper aid from worried Icelanders

Despite being one of the countries most effected by the global financial crisis, concerned listeners of an Icelandic radio station rallied to help British pensioners struggling to cope with energy price rises and the bitter winter weather.

Listeners to the Bitid morning radio show, on the Bylgjan station, donated garments made from Icelandic wool after hearing a warning from the National Pensioners Convention that one in 12 British pensioners could die this winter.

A 20ft container was shipped to Hull, which is twinned with Iceland's capital Reykjavik, where the clothes and blankets were handed over to Age Concern to be distributed to local pensioners.

The Icelandic Wool to England, or Islensk Ull til Englands, appeal began when radio presenters Heimir Karlsson and Kolbrun Bjornsdottir covered a story about the NPC and interviewed an Icelander living in Manchester about the problems faced by older people during winter in the UK.

In response listeners, including a nine-year-old girl who gathered 37 sweaters, spent four days collecting clothes made from pure Icelandic wool to send to the UK.
The appeal comes just months after Iceland's banking system collapsed, leaving the country as one of the worst affected by the global economic slowdown.

In November, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved a 2.1 billion dollar (£1.4 billion) loan for the country - the first IMF loan for a western European nation since 1976.

Mr Karlsson said: "When we broadcast the story that UK pensioners were dying from the cold, our listeners could not believe their own ears.

"I am sure I speak on behalf of every living soul in Iceland when I say that we looked at it with an utter dismay and total disbelief."

Neil Duncan-Jordan, spokesman for the NPC, said: "This is a fantastic and generous act of compassion from the people of Iceland, particularly at a time when their own economic situation is extremely difficult."
