Britain: Dumping Ground for America’s Unwanted Terror Suspects

Britain is set to become a dumping ground for a number of alleged Islamist extremists captured in Afghanistan and elsewhere when the Guantanamo Bay concentration camp in Cuba is closed early this year.

American president-elect Barack Obama has announced his intention to close the camp and wants help to “resettle” 60 prisoners. According to press reports, some are expected to apply for asylum in the UK where they will, of course, be eligible for homes, at least £41 a week in benefits and free NHS services.

According to a newspaper, Whitehall sources said there was a “strong expectation” that President Obama will ask the UK to take detainees who have been cleared for release on the grounds that they may claim they face persecution or torture if sent back to their own countries.

Once in Britain, freed detainees could not be held without charge — and they cannot be charged as almost all the evidence against them is circumstantial or obtained “under duress.”
The detainees who would most certainly qualify for release back to the UK would include Binyam Mohamed and Shaker Aamer. Ethiopian-born Mohamed was given asylum in Britain in 1994, but left to go to Afghanistan in June 2001.

He alleges that he went to “conquer his drug problem” (obviously nonsense as Afghanistan is one of the world’s biggest drug producing countries).

American authorities claim that Mohamed trained in an Al-Qaeda camp, and then moved to Pakistan. He was arrested at Karachi Airport by Pakistani authorities as a suspected terrorist as he was about to board an aircraft back to Britain.

Saudi Arabian-born Aamer visited Britain in 1996 and managed to stay after marrying Zinnira Siddique, a Muslim woman with British nationality. Despite him having four children with his wife, he claimed to be “working for a Saudi charity in Afghanistan” and spent large amounts of time in that country.

The “charity” for which he was working, the Al-Haramain Foundation was closed down after its assets were frozen by the U.S. and Saudi governments who claimed that it was a funnel for funds to al-Qaida.

And so the madness of the asylum swindle continues.
