Yet another sign that Police Forces in the UK are getting far too big for their boots.
It has been reported that an investigation has been launched by the Police Complaints Commission after a British Soldier, Lance Corporal Mark Aspinall, was assaulted by Manchester Police.
The video to the right (larger version here), shows one officer punching the soldier, pounding then scraping Mark's head against the tarmac.
Police officers sent to deal with a man said to be causing a nuisance to paramedics wrongly identified Mark as their man, chased him and rugby tackled him to the floor.
The soldier tries to kick out and bite one of the officers' legs in self-defence (and why shouldn't he?)
In September at Wigan Magistrates Court the officers testified Mark was 'behaving violently' and he was found guilty of the two assaults, even though the bench viewed the footage.
He was given a three-month suspended prison sentence, plus 200 hours community service, and ordered to pay £100 to one officer and £150 to another. But he managed to clear his name last month with a successful appeal at Liverpool Crown Court, when the damning footage was watched by Judge John Phipps.
Mark, from Wigan, said that he remembers thinking:
“I can't believe I've survived Afghanistan and Iraq and now I'm going
to die on this main road in my home town at the hands of the police.”
