Councillor calls for cull of grey squirrels

A COUNCILLOR has called for a cull of Formby’s grey squirrel population in a bid to safeguard a future for their vulnerable red cousins.

Cllr Jack Colbert believes efforts to establish a buffer zone between the two species are futile.

He argues the only effective way to protect the endangered reds is to eliminate the bigger, stronger greys, who drive them from their habitat and carry the deadly pox virus, which has killed at least 15 reds in Formby in recent months.

The Lib Dem councillor, who sits on the planning and Sefton East Parishes committees, said: “I don’t think relying on a buffer zone will work myself. I’ve been calling for a cull of grey squirrels across Sefton.

“I think a combination of the two approaches is what’s required. Greys are overrunning the red squirrels, particularly with this disease, and moving into their habitat.

“We’re putting ever more houses in, which also removes habitat, and I really think a cull is needed. I know it’s a sensitive issue for people, but I think if we don’t do it the consequences could be disastrous for the red squirrel population, which is unique to this area.
