AROUND 9,000 National Insurance numbers have been issued to migrant workers in South Yorkshire in the past year.
More than 1,000 migrant workers arriving in Rotherham have been issued with National Insurance numbers, more than 5,000 in Sheffield, 2,000 in Doncaster and 900 in Barnsley.
Today Rotherham Council said it had set up a working party to look at what effect the influx of migrants and asylum seekers was having on its services.
The exact number of asylum seekers in Rotherham is not known, but it is thought to be more than 600.
Deputy leader Terry Sharman who is chairman of the New Arrivals Working Party said: "It was set up to look at the issues surrounding new arrivals to Rotherham, including both asylum seekers and migrants.
"We shall be looking at all the issues, including language problems and the effects on services.
"Once we have received the findings the information will be passed onto local MPs, who will be asked to forward it onto the Government."
Already local government organisations are pressing for more government aid to help them cope.
Poles made up nearly 40 per cent of the foreign workers, with the majority of others coming from Pakistan, India, Slovakia and Romania.
The influx has led to fears local services will not be able to cope and schools could come under pressure. (I think I have heard these concerns before somewhere)
In Rotherham alone more than 400 children from migrant worker families have been found places in local schools.
Rotherham's Welcome Centre, which helps newly arrived families settle in, has recruited staff speaking a variety of Eastern European languages.
