Pair held on trafficking and rape charges

A JUDGE remanded two men in custody after they appeared before him accused of trafficking a woman into the country for sexual exploitation.

Jacek Sokolowski and Tomasz Slabaszewski appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Friday and denied several allegations which were put to them through a Polish interpreter.

Sokolowski, 42, of Ascham Road, Grange Park, pleaded not guilty to trafficking for sexual exploitation, false imprisonment, causing or inciting prostitution for gain, rape and assault by beating.

Slabaszewski, 31, of Whitworth Road, Pinehurst, denied trafficking for sexual exploitation, false imprisonment, causing or inciting prostitution for gain and five counts of rape.

MPs 'should get pay rise and homes cash'

MPS should be handed a pay rise and have an allowance to kit out their second homes, an Sheffield MP has controversially claimed.

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn said pay should be increased to "reflect the need to have two homes" and called for a set-up allowance to allow new MPs to furnish second homes. She said: "It cannot be right that MPs whose background is one of limited
unable to buy a bed or chair."

Ms Munn is one of a number of MPs who have made submissions to an inquiry into the discredited MPs' expenses system which call for a salary increase.

The Star reported last week that Sheffield Brightside MP David Blunkett told the Committee on Standards in Public Life it was time to "bite the bullet" and increase MPs' £64,766 salary.

Ms Munn's evidence opposed the suggestion of allowing MPs to claim only for rental payments, insisting subsidising mortgage interest payments was "often the cheapest option for public money".

She added: "An alternative suggestion, which I would support, is that the pay of MPs should be increased to reflect the need to have two homes.

"This would ensure the amount is taxable and would leave individual MPs to make arrangements that best suit them.

"It would also do away with a layer of bureaucracy in the House of Commons Fees Office.

"Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley called for an "enhanced salary" or a flat rate allowance, saying replacing the controversial second home allowance with a "substantial" pay rise would "require a courageous and sensible government"

.Barnsley West and Penistone MP Michael Clapham urged the committee to tighten up the rules on MPs having second jobs, saying the register of interests is "too vague"

.Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg said MPs should no longer be allowed to own homes subsidised by the taxpayer and should have second home claims restricted to rental agreements, hotel costs, utility bills and council tax.

Rother Valley MP Kevin Barron said the issue of MPs' pay was a "major problem", adding: "I agree it would be possible, but I suspect impractical, to increase the level of basic pay to form part of simplifying current arrangements."

Mother hits at cheap alcohol as rapist jailed

A mother whose teenage daughter was raped by a stranger said yesterday alcohol was too easily available as her attacker was jailed for 14 years.

Munshur Ali, 22, raped the girl and her friend, both aged 13, after the pair had been drinking while at an X-Factor sleepover with friends.

They were walking the streets when Ali pulled up in his car and asked them for directions, Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester was told.

He then agreed to give them a lift but instead visited a Bargain Booze off licence, plied them with yet more alcohol and drove them to a secluded spot where he raped them in turn.

Sadistic pair jailed for horrific rape of young mum

Two knife-wielding burglars who gang-raped a young mother in her home as her young son begged them to stop have been locked up.

The drink and drug-fuelled pair took turns to rape the woman after horrifically killing the child’s pet in front of him.

Mansoor Shah, 18(TOP), of Glenlee Road, Great Horton, Bradford, was locked up indefinitely for taking the leading role.

Judge Jonathan Rose said Shah had taken “revolting pleasure” in the sadistic abuse of a terrified young woman.

Stefan Reed, 17(BOTTOM), of Lister Avenue, West Bowling, Bradford, was sent to detention for nine years. Both pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary on November 10 last year and raping the woman twice.

Judge Rose said the break-in while the 22-year-old mother and her son slept was motivated by revenge and lust.

He told the teenagers, both handcuffed in the dock at Bradford Crown Court: “You took part in criminality so wicked, so cruel and so brutal that it will stagger and revolt all right-thinking people.”

Councillor investigated after abusive message

Carmarthen Labour councillor Marc Scaife, who has put his name forward for selection as the party’s parliamentary candidate in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr, left on Wednesday for a controversial tour of Libya with Burry Port Town Band.

The band have been criticised for continuing with the tour – part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi coming to power – after the release last week of the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing.

In the phone message, a man who identifies himself as Marc Scaife, uses highly offensive language to berate a 19-year-old member of the band who pulled out of the Libyan tour at a late stage, creating a perceived security problem.

The caller is heard saying: “Listen very f****** carefully. You are a f****** idiot...There’s a massive security risk because of you. Do you realise what’s actually going on? Is anything going on in your tiny little mind?

“We are supposed to be playing in front of some of the biggest world leaders out there. Security is 100% tight and it includes the British Royal Family.

“I expect you to sort this f****** thing out. You go up there, you sort it out or expect a call from MI5. All right?

“I’ve had some serious explaining to do because of your irresponsible actions. Call me back as soon as you get this f****** message or I’ll be driving over to your parents’ house tonight to speak to them.

“Wise up, s***head.”

COMPLAINT HEARING AGAINST COUNCILLOR TO BE HELD IN SECRET

A COMPLAINT hearing about a parish councillor in North Devon will probably be heard in secret.

North Devon Council confirmed that a complaint about a councillor was referred to the authority's monitoring officer, who found there was a case to answer.

A hearing into an alleged breach of the councillor code of conduct will now be held on September 28.

The hearing is referred to in a council standards committee report but the name of the council and councillor, and the nature of the complaint, were not revealed.

The North Devon Journal asked the council if press and public could attend the hearing but was told the hearing was likely to be confidential, as allowed under the Standards Committee (England) Regulations 2008 Statutory Instrument No 1085.

The relevant section of the law states that the meeting can be held in secret if there will be any information which is "subject to any obligation of confidentiality", or "which relates in any way to matters concerning national security".

A council spokesman said the hearing could be opened to the press and public on the day, if the hearing committee decided that was appropriate.

Former Calderdale councillor Stewart Brown convicted of pornography offences

A FORMER Calderdale councillor escaped jail after being convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography.

Stewart Brown, 60, admitted 21 offences of possessing indecent images of children and one of distributing pictures.

At Leeds Crown Court he was given a nine-month prison sentence suspended for two years.

In 2006 he was mayor of Hebden Royd and was also a Labour councillor.
Brown, of Nutclough, Hebden Bridge, admitted all the charges, some of which were said to relate to images of girls as young as three.

The charges date back to April last year when police investigators working online found a free file-sharing website, which prosecutor Michael Collins described as a forum where users could post images of girls in school uniforms for others to see and comment on.

By tracing an address from where some images were uploaded, officers were led to Brown. He had distributed 10 photos which fell under level one guidelines relating to child pornography, meaning they depicted erotic posing but no sexual activity.

Police found 1,232 indecent images of children on his computer hard drive and CDs.

Man sexually assaulted girl, 16, on train

DETECTIVES are appealing for information after a teenager was sexually assaulted on a train travelling towards Gunnersbury.

British Transport Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident which took place on Tuesday June 23.

A 16-year-old girl got on the train at Brondesbury, Kilburn, and sat opposite a man who was already on board.

During the journey, between 9:50am and 10:10am, the man touched the girl inappropriately, and the distressed teenager left the train at Gunnersbury station. The man then followed her off the train into the waiting room and tried to speak to her before leaving.

BTP Detective Constable Vicki Bladen, said: "Detectives have made local inquiries and reviewed CCTV and are now asking for help from the public to identify the man pictured.

"I would urge anyone who recognises this man, or knows anything about what happened, to come forward and contact us. The man police would like to speak to is Asian and aged in his 40s. He is described as unshaven with black hair and dark eyes."

Anyone with information about the incident or the man in the CCTV images should contact BTP on 0800 40 50 40, quoting incident number 225 of 23.6.09 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Last Post for the last fighting Tommy

The Last Post has finally sounded for the last witness.

Resting beneath the Union Flag and a huge wreath of red English roses, Harry Patch went over the top for the last time yesterday, into the arms of his maker and the mates he could never forget.

Gentle Somerset rain and the peerless crescendo of Elgar's Nimrod were the perfect backdrop to this profound moment of closure for the nation - and, indeed, the wider world.

We really were saying goodbye to that generation who have haunted and yet inspired us for the best part of a century.

All 1,400 seats in Wells Cathedral were filled while thousands more gathered in the rainy precincts and streets outside to say farewell to the last soldier of the Great War, the 'last fighting Tommy', the last man who had known the smell of the trenches and the horrors that lay beyond them.

The plumber from Combe Down had always rejected suggestions of a state funeral for the last of the last. But this was not far off. The governments and armies of four nations - including Germany - had sent delegations to salute the 111-year-old.
Leading the home team was a trio of women. The Duchess of Cornwall was representing the Prince of Wales (Harry had served in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry).
Alongside her was the Duchess of Gloucester, the President of the World War One Veterans' Association.

And Harriet Harman, this week's understudy to Gordon Brown, was representing the Government.

England's smallest city had been filling up from breakfast time as people from all over Britain came to pay their respects to an entire epoch. Crowds of all ages lined the streets to the city centre from Fletcher House, Mr Patch's care home for the last 12 years of his life.

As the hearse proceeded at walking speed, it was followed by six pall-bearers from the 1st Battalion The Rifles (five of whom have recently returned from fighting in Afghanistan). Mr Patch had specifically asked that his pall-bearers should be roughly the same age as he was - 19 - when he was wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele in Ypres in 1917.

He had also requested that his funeral should be a statement of peace and reconciliation, with invitations extended to allies and old foes alike. So, the coffin was also escorted by two soldiers from, respectively, Belgium, France and Germany.

Society no longer fit for purpose

I REALLY don't think we can lay all the blame on BNP's Nick Griffin for a world of hatred , considering we have had years of Muslim clerics preaching death to the infidels and no-one seems to be bothered about this.

Then there is the fact of our stupidly inept Government way back to Blair allowing millions of immigrants in in the last 12 years to add to the millions already here. This has caused a strong feeling of discontent because this tiny island has been sw amped, changed beyond all recognition and our culture is fast disappearing.

Even the immigrants who have been here 30 years or more don't like what is happening.

The drain on our finances in benefits, not to mention the £40 million a day to the EU, is just horrendous. But not to worry, the good old tax payers will finance it all!

Every day we read letters from readers all in the same mind. Why can't our Government realise all the unrest they are causing by not pulling up the drawbridge?

We all want Britain to feel like Britain once again, but what chance if Tony Blair is made president of the EU? He made one hell of a mess of this country to be followed by Brown to finish it off. So how on earth will he manage Europe? Ye gods!

We have a multicultural society very few of us wanted, foisted on us gradually by a group of people in power who are - to coin one of their phrases - totally unfit for purpose.
